Elegant and curiously shaped seed pods, flowers and plants found in Cooktown’s beautiful national parks are the current inspiration behind hand-crafted jewellery and sculptural works by Nicole Jakins of Purple Shoes. |

From graceful Grevillea seed pods, to the unusual UFO-like Burdekin seed pods found in the area, the artist considers these objects ‘natures diamonds’, silently waiting to be treasured by birds, insects, swelling creeks or the soil. Working from her eco studio situated in beautiful Savannah bushlands, Nicole doesn’t merely try to replicate what she sees or finds, but tries to interpret patterns, shapes and arrangements of plants, while being careful not to over embellish through over-use of colour or design. Purple Shoes designs are one-off unique jewellery objects produced using materials such as 100% recycled sterling silver, copper, and other re-claimed and found objects. Translating to ‘spiritual journey’, the aim of Purple Shoes is to tread lightly on natures fragile environment, to observe and appreciate the many intricacies it has to offer. |
